How to get your brand cited by Copilot: 7 levers
The operational guide to durably increase your citation rate in the answers of Microsoft Copilot, an engine backed by the Bing index. Concrete, actionable, measurable.
Why aiming for a Copilot citation changes everything
When Copilot recommends a brand in its answer, three things happen at once: (1) the user receives your name as an expert suggestion and not as an advertisement, (2) the barrier to purchase drops because the brand has been "validated" by the AI, (3) the acquisition cost is zero. And since Copilot displays clickable source links under each answer, the citation also generates direct traffic to your site.
But being cited is not a matter of luck. Copilot applies a repeatable logic, largely inherited from how Bing works. This guide breaks down exactly what triggers a citation, so you can optimize your brand accordingly.
How does Copilot choose the brands it cites?
Unlike a model that would draw only from its training memory, Copilot works in RAG (retrieval-augmented generation): for each question, it launches one or more searches in the Bing index in real time, selects the best pages, then writes an answer explicitly citing these sources as clickable numbered notes.
The consequence is direct: your presence and your ranking in Bing determine your presence in Copilot. The weight of a source depends on three criteria:
- Bing indexing and ranking: Copilot can only cite what Bing has indexed. A page absent from the Bing index, or poorly ranked on the query reformulated by Copilot, has no chance of being picked up.
- Direct match to the question: Copilot reformulates the user's question into several queries and favors pages that answer explicitly and in a structured way (clear titles, answer up top, factual data).
- Freshness and authority: Bing strongly values recency and trust signals (established domain, structured data, brand consistency). The IndexNow protocol additionally allows near-immediate consideration of new pages.
In short: to be cited by Copilot, you need to be well indexed and well ranked in Bing on the queries that matter, with content that directly answers the intent.
The 7 concrete levers to multiply your citations
Here are the 7 actions ranked by impact/effort ratio, specific to the Bing / Copilot ecosystem. Do the first 3 first, you will capture 80% of the gain.
This is the foundation. Create a Bing Webmaster Tools account, verify your domain, submit your sitemap and check that your key pages are properly indexed. If you use Google Search Console, importing your site directly into Bing takes a few minutes. Without clean Bing indexing, no other lever will work, because Copilot can only cite pages present in the Bing index.
IndexNow is the protocol pushed by Microsoft to signal each new page or update to Bing in near real time. Enable it (natively on Cloudflare, or via a CMS plugin such as WordPress/Yoast) so your fresh content is indexable, and therefore citable by Copilot, in hours rather than weeks. A decisive lever for any news content or original data.
Bing does not rank exactly like Google: it values more highly the exact keyword matches in the title and content, established domains and social signals. Strengthen your target pages with an H1 containing the exact term, a clear answer at the top of the page, in-depth content and quality backlinks. A top 3 page on Bing has a strong chance of being cited by Copilot on the associated query.
Bing makes intensive use of Schema.org markup to understand and extract your content. Add the relevant schemas: Organization and Article on all your pages, FAQPage on your question pages, Product and Review for e-commerce. Well-marked-up content is more easily understood, extracted and cited by Copilot.
Copilot favors pages that explicitly answer a question. Winning structure: a title in the form of a question or target term, a synthetic answer of 2-3 sentences right under the title, then the development in short sections with subheadings, lists and tables. This "snippet-friendly" format makes extraction easier for Copilot's engine.
Copilot frequently cites Wikipedia, trade directories, comparison sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot) and the press, all indexed by Bing. Ensure a clean presence on these sources: a complete and verified profile, recent reviews, editorial mentions. The more your brand appears on trusted domains already well ranked in Bing, the more sources Copilot has to cite you.
Copilot is integrated into Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365. Make your brand identity consistent on LinkedIn (a Microsoft property, heavily indexed), keep a Bing Places / local directories profile up to date, and check that your brand's name, descriptions and URLs are consistent everywhere. This consistency reinforces the trust that Bing, and therefore Copilot, places in your entity.
How to measure your citation rate
Without measurement, you are shooting blind. The main metric is the citation rate per prompt: across N targeted prompts, in how many Copilot answers does your brand appear, in text or in the source links displayed?
Manual method (for 10-20 prompts): each month, ask Copilot the same prompts, note the citations and cited source links in a spreadsheet. Automated method (for 30+ prompts): Pulsar Ranking queries your target prompts every week and reports back the citation rate, the position as a cited source and the trend.
3 metrics to track without fail
Percentage of prompts where your brand appears at least once, in text or in the linked sources. Realistic target at 6 months: 25-40%.
When you are cited, does your link appear in note 1, 3 or at the end of the list? As on Bing, the position in the sources reflects your ranking and weighs on visibility.
Is your brand cited as a leader, a credible challenger, or with a reservation? The tone qualifies the quality of the signal.
4 mistakes that sabotage your citations
- Optimizing for Google while ignoring BingMany brands have never verified their site in Bing Webmaster Tools and are poorly indexed on Bing. Yet Copilot only cites the Bing index: an excellent Google position is useless if Bing ignores you. Treat Bing as a channel in its own right.
- Publishing purely marketing contentCopilot filters out content with a strong commercial tone ("revolutionary solution", "undisputed leader"). Factual, structured and nuanced text is far more likely to be extracted and cited than sales copy.
- Neglecting structure and markupContent without clear titles, without a direct answer up top and without structured data is hard for Copilot's engine to extract. Substance is not enough: the "snippet-friendly" form and Schema.org condition the pickup.
- Not iteratingCitation optimization is not a one-shot. The Bing index evolves, Copilot adjusts its orchestration, your competitors move. Minimum cycle: monthly check of the citation rate, quarterly action plan.
